May Mental Health Event: A Conversation with Mariel Hemingway

The MHSOAC is sponsoring two events for May Mental Health Month: “A Conversation with Mariel Hemingway”. One event is in Sacramento, the other in Los Angeles.

Actress Mariel Hemingway will show clips from her documentary “Running from Crazy”; this film was show at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. She will talk about her family’s legacy of mental illness and her own path of wellness and recovery. A panel discussion will follow with Mariel and members of the mental health community.

Join us for an afternoon of discussion and education starting at noon on May 14 at Sacramento’s Crest Theater and at 7:00 PM on May 15 at the ArcLight Theater in Hollywood.

OSHPD Community Forums - Feedback Requested

The Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) would like your feedback on the next Mental Health Workforce Education and Training (WET) Five-Year Plan, 2014-2019. This Five-Year-Plan guides the development of public mental health workforce strategies – at state, regional and local levels – towards an integrated mental health service delivery system. Via 14 community forums, OSHPD seeks feedback on:

  • Engagement and employment of mental health consumers and family members in the mental health workforce;
  • Engagement and employment of diverse, racial, ethnic community, and underrepresented individuals in the mental health workforce;
  • Incentives to recruit and retain students to enter mental health careers;
  • Education and training programs for mental health providers (expansion, curriculum);
  • Reduction of stigma associated with mental illness in the workforce; and
  • Regional collaboration on mental health workforce development strategies.

Community Forum target audience includes, but is not limited to: mental health providers, educators, consumer and family members, multicultural communities, county mental health directors/administrators, county mental health contractors, and workforce development leaders. Community forums are not limited to residents of that county; OSHPD encourages members of surrounding counties to attend as well. For a complete list of dates, locations and times of the 14 community forums, click here. (Please note that the Napa, Monterey, Sacramento, and Orange County community forums have been added)

To RSVP, go to: OSHPD.MHSAWET@oshpd.ca.gov or call (916) 326-3635 indicating your name, organization, and community forum you will be attending. If you have any questions, please contact Elvira Chairez at Elvira.Chairez@oshpd.ca.gov.
